What Age Should a Child Get Their First Shoes?

Baby feet are soft and squishy and rigid shoes are not helpful—for mom or baby. As your child starts to move, first crawling and beginning to stand between 6-12 months, you may start looking for light, flexible shoes with some traction.

You Might be Wondering, When Should You Get Your Baby First Shoes?

If your child is going to any special event or daycare, you’ll want a loose, flexible shoe that stays on and that does not impede natural foot movement.

Or, When Is My Baby Ready For First Shoes?

When your baby is standing and walking in public places, they’ll need a light flexible first shoe. Pediatricians recommend a flexible sole, like rubber. Look for lightweight styles that your child will leave on. This way, you won’t be hunting for shoes they take off, and they’ll be able to move naturally.

Avoid shrunken down adult style sneakers with big soles that make them fall and create frustration for everyone.

Here’s the Best Tip for When to Get Your Baby’s First Shoes:

When a baby is standing, find them their first shoe in the lightest, most flexible style possible. Baby feet have cartilage and soft tissues. They need full, natural movement in order to develop the best balance and posture.
