How to Store Baby Gear Without the Clutter

Babies are tiny. Their stuff is not.

Somehow a few onesies turn into drawers of clothes, toys multiply overnight, and baby gear slowly takes over every corner of the home.

For families living in apartments or smaller homes, the goal isn’t to eliminate baby gear — it’s to store it in a way that keeps the space calm and functional.

Here are a few simple systems that work well for busy families with little kids.

Store Clothes by Size

Babies grow fast, and clothing cycles through sizes constantly.

Instead of mixing everything together, keep a few labeled bins or baskets by size — newborn, 3–6 months, 6–12 months, and so on.

When something stops fitting, it goes straight into the next-size bin or a donation bag. This prevents drawers from filling up with clothes that no longer work.

Many parents do this with baby shoes as well, especially smaller sizes like infant shoes, which babies quickly outgrow.

Keeping sizes organized saves time when you suddenly need the next size up.

Use Vertical Space

In small homes, walls are valuable storage.

Try using:
– wall hooks for jackets and diaper bags
– floating shelves for books and toys
– hanging organizers in closets

Vertical storage keeps things accessible without taking up precious floor space.

It also helps toys and everyday items stay visible so kids can easily find what they want.

Rotate Toys Instead of Storing Everything Out

One of the easiest ways to reduce clutter is rotating toys.

Keep a small number of toys out — around five to eight works well — and store the rest in a closet or bin.

Every couple weeks, rotate them.

Kids stay interested in the toys they have, and your living room doesn’t feel like a toy store.

Create Small Activity Zones

Instead of toys spreading across the entire house, create tiny zones for different activities.

A small basket of board books near a chair becomes a reading corner. A tray with crayons and paper becomes a drawing station.

Keeping toys grouped like this helps kids focus on one activity at a time — and cleanup becomes much easier.

Store Baby Gear by “Use Frequency”

Not every baby item needs to live in the main living space.

Try grouping gear into three categories:

– everyday items
– weekly items
– rarely used items

Things used daily should stay easily accessible. Weekly gear can live in closets or cabinets. Rarely used items can go under the bed or in higher storage areas.

This simple system prevents your main living space from filling up with things you only use occasionally.

Use Baskets Instead of Complex Systems

Complicated storage systems rarely work well with small children.

Simple baskets are often the most effective option. Toys, blankets, stuffed animals, and random baby items can all be tossed into a basket quickly at the end of the day.

Cleanup becomes a quick reset instead of a long organizing session.

Keep the Entryway Simple

Leaving the house with a baby already takes time.

Creating a small entry station helps streamline mornings. A basket with wipes, a hat, sunscreen, and a small toy makes it easy to grab what you need before heading out.

Parents often keep everyday items like baby shoes here too — things like soft sole crib shoes or flexible options used for quick outings.

Do Small Weekly Declutters

Clutter builds slowly with kids.

Taking five minutes once a week to move things along — clothes that don’t fit, toys that aren’t used, or gear that’s no longer needed — keeps the home from feeling overwhelmed.

Small resets are easier than big ones.

Living with babies in a small home doesn’t require perfect organization.

It just requires a few systems that make daily life simpler — and a little room left over for playing on the floor.
